Angels rantAnd now for my Angels rant, which I'm sure no one but me cares about. All the sports writers seem to know that the Angels have a heavily overloaded outfield, especially compared to last year. I'm quite worried about the infield, though. For 2B-SS-3B, they basically only have 4 ML ready players. Of them, all 4 were out on the DL last year at some point or another. Last year, the Angels moved Figgins into RF for a short time. It's unfortunate that outfielders generally only get moved to 1B.I hear so many positive things about Brandon Wood (who I didn't count above as ML ready, even though he play SS-3B). The next Troy Glaus is what I've heard, even. However, all I see in his numbers are tons upon tons of strikeouts. He's been known to pile up the SOs in the minors, and as of today in Spring Training, he's hitting .077 with 11 strikeouts in 26 at-bats (amusingly, both of his two hits are home runs). All I have to say is that the Cabrera-Garland trade might come back to bite them in the ass.In my above count, I also didn't count Rob Quinlan, who can play all the corner positions, including 3B.Of the three open reserve spots on the team, I'll put my chips on Rivera and Quinlan being locks. I'd lean towards the third slot going to Haynes, since they can't send him to the minors without him clearing waivers.

Idol rantI can't believe Kristy Cook didn't get voted off Idol today. The country ho-down version of Eight Days a Week was awful. For those of you who don't know, I'm pulling for Carly, Ramiele, and Brooke on the girls side. I haven't heard much of the guys yet, but I'd say David Cook has the Daughtry-esque sound going for him.

A rant on softwareIf you don't want to be bored to sleep, I suggest you skip this post and go to the previous one.I was looking at the Asus Eee PC a while back. It's marketed as an inexpensive, ultraportable laptop (but with very stripped down hardware). I probably won't ever buy one, but that doesn't stop me from looking at it obssessively. The Eee PC only has 512 MB of memory. My computer here also only has 512 MB of memory. Eee is running Xandros Linux. I'm running Windows. I was reading an Anandtech article on the Eee PC which claims there were significant slowdowns due to not enough memory when running a relatively small number of applications. The article is here.I'm looking at the bottom picture, the task manager. Frankly, it disturbs me. Web (Firefox): VmSize=171,908, VmRss=46,604. Skype: VmSize=78,496, VmRss=28,766, File Manager VmSize=40,960, VmRss=21,796, Messenger (Pidgin), VmSize=30,068, VmRss=17,560.Note that I can't tell how much memory is shared in shared objects. But my guess is not much, seeing as how none of above mentioned programs even share common windowing toolkits.I've experienced the bloat of Pidgin firsthand in Windows, which is why I don't bother running it in while I'm idle anymore. When it was still called Gaim, it was a bit lighter on the memory usage, VM footprint wouldn't grow much above 10 MB. But that number slowly crept up and of course, you have to upgrade because the protocols keep changing. I blame the rising memory footprint on feature bloat. The review claims that Firefox only has 3 tabs open. Why does it need to reserve 171 MB of memory. Does it really need 50 MB to render each page? Are web pages getting that complicated? Is that why it takes pages forever to download and display on my phone? Am I really asking too many questions?I've run many applications which do no more than they need to and a) load really fast and b) don't waste memory. Sadly, it looks like the trend is moving away from this.

Ah, blog, it's been a whileHere are some things you might be interested to know:I'm going to start planning a wedding This is my chance to shine and show my fiancee that I am, in fact, one who can be counted on to tackle such a big task.As mentioned previously, I'm looking to buy a house. My agent has been out of town for the past few weeks, but hopefully we'll be looking at some places in a few weeks. So if I seem a bit stressed out in the next six months, you'll know why.

It is time...Those who I may have talked to in the past year and a half know that I've claimed to have been "looking at housing prices". In my mind, this differs from "looking for a house" because I was in no way planning on buying a house. I just went onto a real estate website and jotted down some prices in various locations and checked them again over a various periods of time. However, now, I'm proud to announce that one and a half years later, I'm "looking for a house". Note that I'm still in the early stages, but this means that I will actually do stuff now rather than just sit back and watch. We'll see how this goes.

Long overdue...Well, a while back, on 11/1/07, I had a monstrous game in Wii baseball. Somehow, I managed to get 79 total bases (excluding walks).
Anyways, since then, I've been in quite a drought. I haven't even been able to get up to 40 total bases (which is my cutoff for a "good" game). I've basically decided to retire from Wii Sports for a wihle and play some other games. Perhaps something like Nights or Super Mario Galaxy.

Fun with the DSWell, I got a Nintendo DS Lite a little while back. I got the bundle with Brain Age 2 and the case. I'm a bit disappointed with the case because frankly, it looks like a woman's wallet. Anyways, I got the Crimson Red version (it's the shiniest and newest color after all =)With Brain Age 2, usually I hate the little mini-games that you get at the beginning of Training sometimes. I absolutely suck at connect the dots. I'm marginally better at acrostics. For those who don't know, if gives you a three letter word and you have to convert it to an acronym describing it without using the word for any letter. So for example, CAR could be Cool Ass Ride. Or something. Afterwards, they show you what the authors thought of. Usually, I come up with something crappy, but this time I'm actually proud to show what I came up with last week (10/24).ART - Me: Almost Real Talent DS: Airy Refined TalentASP - Me: A Snaky Problem DS: A Serious ProblemBAR - Me: Below Average Railing DS: Blatant Admission Refusal (wtf, are they talking about the test to be a lawyer??)Anyways, I also got Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon. It's quite an addicting game, but I haven't played the rest of the Harvest Moon series, so I feel like I'm a bit behind on things (eg. is it better to sell excess items or ship them off for sale?). Quite a nice way to pass the time, though :)Archives
